ChitChat Omegle Alternative

An Omegle Alternative for Talking to One Stranger at a Time

If you miss opening a tab and finding a stranger on the other side, this is the same impulse with two improvements: you can write to someone you chose, and you can keep the people worth keeping.

Text or video, like before?

Video is a random one-on-one match. Text works by picking someone in Who's online and messaging them; it is not a blind text pairing.

The gap

What did Omegle leave behind?

A habit without a home. For years Omegle was the default answer to "I am bored and want to talk to someone I do not know". When it closed in 2023, that habit did not go away. It just lost its address.

ChitChat shares the part that mattered: one stranger at a time, straight from a browser, no account needed to begin. This page is not a history lesson. It is a practical map: here is what you used to do there, and here is what the same impulse looks like on ChitChat, including the places where it is different.

What it got right

What did people like about Omegle text chat?

Two things, mostly. It was simple: you typed, a stranger typed back, and that was all. There was nothing in the way. You did not register, you did not upload a photo, you did not write a bio. You arrived and you were talking.

The second was that text let you keep your face out of it. Plenty of people never touched the video side at all. They liked chatting with a stranger from behind a keyboard, where a messy room, a bad hair day or plain shyness made no difference. Typing gave them time to think, and it meant they could talk from a bus, a library or a bedroom with thin walls.

What people liked less is worth remembering too. Every conversation was disposable. When the other person disconnected, they were gone, and a wonderful two-hour exchange left you with nothing but a blank page. Keep that in mind, because it is the main thing that changes here.

The Text button

What replaces the Text button here?

Who's online does, and it works differently, so let us be exact. ChitChat does not have a button that pairs you blindly with a random person for a typed-only conversation. It does not copy that mechanism.

What it has is a live list of people who are on the site at this moment, and it changes constantly. You tap a person, their profile opens, and you send them a message. No camera, no voice, just the two of you typing.

In use it feels less like a slot machine and more like walking into a room and choosing who to say hello to. You lose the blind draw. You gain a look at who you are writing to before you write, a first line that can be about something real, and a person you can find again afterwards. The text chat with strangers page shows how to pick someone and what to send.

The Video button

What is the Video button on ChitChat?

The Start button, and this one will feel familiar. Tap it and ChitChat matches you at random with a person who is online, for a one-on-one video chat. You do not choose and neither do they. If the conversation is not working, either of you can end it.

There is a message box on the call, so the old habit of typing while on camera carries over, and it helps when the two of you speak different languages. One difference from the old days: a new match takes one of your free matches, or some coins if you have run out, so hammering the next button is not the way to play it. How ChitChat works goes through the match screen in order.

New here

What is here that the old way never had?

Two things, and each answers a complaint people had for years.

You can keep people

Follow someone and they are saved to your following list. Their profile stays one tap away, and from it you can message them or start a video call directly. The best conversation of your week no longer disappears when a tab closes.

You can talk across languages

Typed messages are translated automatically, so a stranger who shares none of your languages becomes someone you can write to. Text chat explains how far the translation goes.

Getting in

Do you need to sign up?

No. Like Omegle, ChitChat needs no login to begin. This is the part of the old experience that carries over completely. ChitChat lets you in as a guest automatically. There is no form, no email check and no profile to fill in before you can talk to strangers.

An account exists and is optional at the start. Its job is to carry the people you follow from one device to another, and you need one if you ever buy coins. You can decide about it after your first good conversation.

Still true

Which old Omegle habits still work?

Most of them. Open with something better than "hi": a question, an observation, anything with a hook in it. Do not open with a list of personal questions; it reads like a form, and nobody enjoys filling in a form. Be the person who makes the other one glad they did not skip.

Leaving is still fine. You do not owe a stranger a long goodbye, and they do not owe you one. If a chat turns unpleasant, go, and use the report option on their profile if they broke the rules.

One habit to add. When you find someone good, follow them before you say goodnight. It takes one tap, and it is the difference between a nice memory and a friend.

Habits to drop

Which old habits should you leave behind?

The rapid-fire next. On the old site, skipping cost nothing, so people skipped on sight and judged a stranger in half a second. Here a new match draws on your free matches, and more to the point, half a second was never enough to tell whether someone was worth talking to. Slow down and the place gets better.

The throwaway persona is another. When nobody could ever find you again, there was no reason to be consistent, or even polite. On ChitChat a person you get on with may follow you and write to you next week. It pays to be someone worth following.

And drop the idea that text and video are separate worlds. You can write to someone for a few days and then call them from their profile, or meet on video and carry on in messages afterwards. The two sides were walled off before. Here they are two ways of reaching the same person.

Expectations

What should you expect on your first night?

Expect the first two or three chats to be short. That is normal anywhere strangers meet: people are settling in, testing the water, working out what they are in the mood for. A conversation that runs on its own usually takes a few tries to find.

Expect a mix. You will meet people on the far side of the world and people a short drive away, people who want to talk about music for an hour and people who want to practise their English for five minutes. Expect to use both doors: a random video match when you feel bold, a typed message to someone in Who's online when you do not.

And expect it to be a little different from what you remember, in a good way. If you want to see how ChitChat stacks up against other places in the same family, we wrote out the points worth comparing on sites like ChitChat.
