The ChitChat Chat Room Is Two People

No lobby, no scrolling wall of strangers talking past each other. See who is online right now, pick one person, and have a conversation that is actually with you.

Where is the chat room?

It is a room for two, with no lobby to join. Open Who's online to see who is around, by country if you like, then message or video call one person from their profile.

The short answer

Does ChitChat have chat rooms?

Not in the old sense. A chat on ChitChat is not a lobby where dozens of people type over one another. A call is between you and one other person, so the ChitChat chat room, if you want to call it that, has exactly two people in it: you and whoever you are talking to.

"Chat room" is the old word for a place where you can talk to someone. The place exists. It simply has a different shape: instead of walking into a crowd and hoping to be noticed, you are put in front of one person, or you pick one yourself.

Instead of a lobby

What do you get instead of a room?

A live list called Who's online. It shows the people who are on ChitChat right now, each with a photo and a name, and it refreshes as people come and go. Think of it as the part of a chat room you really wanted, the list of who is around, without the scrolling wall of text beside it.

Tap any person and their profile opens. From there you can follow them, send a message or start a video call. Nothing you write is thrown into a public stream; it goes to that one person.

Around the world

Who's online by country?

Who's online can be viewed by country. If you would like to practise Spanish, see who is on from Mexico or Colombia. If you are curious about somewhere you have never been, open that country and say hello to someone who lives there.

This is a way of looking at the list, not a promise about who is on at any given minute. Countries are busier in their own evenings, so the same view at breakfast and at midnight will show you different people. Language is less of a wall than it sounds, because typed messages are translated automatically.

Getting started

How do you start talking to someone from the list?

In three short moves, none of which needs a nickname form or a room code.

  1. 1

    Open Who's online

Use the button at the top of this page or in the bar at the bottom of your phone screen.

  2. 2

    Tap a person

Their profile opens with their photos and a couple of buttons. Take a second to look; it gives you something to open with.

  3. 3

    Message or call

Write a first line if you would like to ease in, or press the video call button to talk face to face straight away.

Want to be surprised instead of choosing? Tap Start and ChitChat matches you with a random person on video. How ChitChat works covers that route.

Why one on one

What is a chat room good at, and does one-on-one do it better?

A room feels "on": you drop in and there is company. That part is worth keeping, and ChitChat keeps it in Who's online, a live list that has moved on a little each time you look.

What rooms do badly is conversation. In a busy public room your hello scrolls off the screen in five seconds. The loudest three people set the tone. Replies arrive out of order, half of them meant for someone else, and a quiet newcomer can type for ten minutes without one answer. A room gives you company in the way a crowded station gives you company.

One on one fixes the thing that was broken. When there are only two of you, your message cannot be buried, the other person is actually talking to you, and silence is something the two of you can fill together. You lose the background noise.

For room regulars

Coming from a group chat room? Which habits should you change?

If you grew up in public rooms, a few reflexes will work against you here. Swap them and the place opens up.

Stop broadcasting, start addressing

In a room you post "hi all, anyone want to chat?" and wait. Here that line has no audience. Write to one person and make it about them: something from their profile, their country, the hour it must be where they are.

Stop lurking

A room lets you sit and watch. A one-on-one chat has no gallery, and the other person can tell when nobody is home. You do not have to be witty. You do have to answer.

Stop starting over every night

Rooms forget you when you leave. ChitChat does not have to. Follow the people you liked, and tomorrow you can pick up with them from your following list.

First words

What do you say first?

Something short, specific and easy to answer. "Hey, how is your evening going over there?" beats a bare "hi" every time, because it hands the other person a question. We keep a whole table of weak openers and better ones on text chat with strangers, along with what to do when a message goes unanswered.

And if typing feels like the slow road, remember that the fastest way to get past small talk is to see a face. The video call button on every profile is there for the moment you both feel like it.

ChitChat chat room questions

Is there a ChitChat chat room?

Not a lobby to join. A chat on ChitChat is one on one: you are matched with a single person on video, or you choose someone from Who's online and message or call them.

Are there group rooms on ChitChat?

The chats described on this page are between two people, so that nobody gets talked over. Who's online shows you who is around, and you contact one person at a time.

What do I do instead of joining a room?

Open Who's online, tap a person and send a message or start a video call from their profile. Or tap Start and let ChitChat pick someone for you.

Where is the Who's online button?

At the top of every page on a computer, and in the bar at the bottom of the screen on a phone.

What happens when I tap someone in the list?

Their profile opens. From it you can follow the person, send a message or start a video call.

Can I see who is online before I chat?

Yes. Who's online is a live list with photos and names. You can look through it before contacting anyone.

Can I chat with people from one country?

You can view Who's online by country and contact people from that view. The Start button, by contrast, picks at random.

Does looking through the list use my free matches?

No. Browsing Who's online and opening profiles does not use a match. ChitChat is free to start, and the is ChitChat free page explains the rest.

Do I need a nickname to enter?

No. There is no nickname form at the door. You go in as a guest automatically and can start chatting immediately.

A room for two is waiting

See who is online this minute and say hello to one of them. No nickname, no lobby, no shouting to be heard.
