ChitChat About

About ChitChat

A place to talk to one stranger at a time, by video or by message, and to keep the ones you click with. This page explains why it is built that way, who it suits and who it does not.

ChitChat in a sentence?

Talk to strangers one at a time on video or by message, straight from your browser, and follow the good ones so they become friends.

In one paragraph

What is ChitChat?

ChitChat is a website where you talk to strangers one at a time and keep the ones you like as friends. You can meet a random person on live video, or you can pick someone who is online and send them a message. It runs in a browser on phones and computers, you start as a guest, and it is free to start.

That is the product. The rest of this page is about the reasoning: why it is built around pairs, what each decision gained and what it gave up, who gets the most out of it, and who would be happier somewhere else.

The idea

Why is ChitChat built around one person at a time?

Because attention is what makes a conversation feel like one, and attention does not divide well. When twelve people share a screen, each of them gets a twelfth of everyone else. The confident ones fill the space and the rest watch. When there are two of you, there is nowhere for either person to hide and nobody to perform for, so people tend to say what they actually think.

There is a second reason, and it is about the quiet people. In a crowd, the person who needs a moment to find their words never gets that moment. In a pair, a pause is just a pause. The other person waits, or fills it, and the chat carries on. A lot of the people who say they are bad at talking to strangers turn out to be bad at talking over strangers, which is a different problem.

The third reason is practical. A pair can decide things. Two people can agree to switch from typing to video, to change language, to talk again tomorrow. A room cannot agree on anything, which is why rooms drift and pairs go somewhere.

Trade-offs

What did we choose, and what did each choice cost?

Every product is a set of decisions with a price attached. These are ours, with the price written next to each one.

Guests first, accounts later

You are let in without a form, so the first tap leads to a person. The price is that a guest session belongs to one browser. Change phone or clear your browsing data and you begin again, unless you have signed in by then. ChitChat login sets out where that line falls.

A browser, not a store

Nothing has to be downloaded or kept up to date, and the same address works on any device. The price is that the site depends on your browser for camera and microphone access, so one refused permission prompt can leave the picture dark until you change it back.

Chance and choice, side by side

The Start button picks someone for you; Who's online lets you pick for yourself. Keeping both means neither is as elaborate as it would be on a site that did only one. We think the pairing is worth more than the polish.

Translation for what you type

Typed messages are translated automatically, which opens the list of people you can talk to far beyond your own language. The price is that it covers writing and not speech. On a call, you still lean on the words you share.

Free to start, not free without end

You can find out whether you like the place before any money is involved. The price of saying it that plainly is a less exciting headline, and we will take that.

A good fit

Who gets the most out of ChitChat?

Four kinds of people tend to like it here. You may recognise yourself in one of them, or in a bit of each.

The bored and the wide awake

It is late, or it is a slow afternoon, and everyone you know is busy. You do not want to scroll. You want another human being to say something unexpected.

The language learner

You have studied the grammar and now you need a real person to try it on. Here you can speak with someone who uses the language every day, and fall back on typed messages when a sentence will not come.

The one who would rather type first

Cameras are not for everyone, or not straight away. You can write to people from their profiles for as long as you like and move to video only if and when you both want to.

The collector of far-off friends

You like knowing someone in a city you have never visited. Who's online can be viewed by country, and following lets a chance meeting become someone you talk to regularly.

Not a fit

Who would be happier somewhere else?

A site is easier to trust when it says who it is not for. If one of these is exactly what you came looking for, better to know before you spend an evening here.

  • People who want a busy lobby. The chats here are pairs. If the fun for you is a crowd typing at once, with jokes flying past and no pressure to answer, a one-on-one call will feel too quiet.
  • People who want to be paired blind for typing only. The random match is video. A text conversation starts with a person you chose from Who's online.
  • People who want a place to post. ChitChat is built for conversations between two people, and that is where the effort goes.
  • People who want free with no limit. It is free to start, and coins exist. We say where the line is so nobody finds it by surprise.
  • People who want spoken translation. Typed messages are translated. Voices are not.

If none of those is a dealbreaker, the rest of the site is one tap away.

The map

What can you do here, and where is each part explained?

We do not repeat the feature pages on this one. Here is the short version, with the page that covers each part properly.

Money

How does the site pay its way?

Through coins. ChitChat is free to start, and the people who want more than the free part buy coins for it. That is the whole arrangement, and it is why there is no paywall at the door: the site only earns anything from someone who has already tried it and decided it is worth more of their time.

It also explains what you will not find here: there is no long profile to fill in before you can talk. Where the free part ends and what coins cover is laid out on is ChitChat free, which is the only page that goes into it.

What we believe

What makes a good conversation, in our view?

Three ideas shape the product, and you can see each of them in how it is built.

First, starting should cost nothing in effort. Every form between you and a hello is a reason to give up. So you are let in as a guest, the site runs in the browser you already have, and the first tap leads to a person.

Second, both people should be free to go. A chat you cannot leave is not a chat. Either person can end a call, and nobody owes the other an explanation. Oddly, that freedom is what makes people stay: it is easier to relax when the door is not locked.

Third, good conversations deserve a second chapter. The saddest thing about meeting a stranger online is losing them thirty minutes later. So you can follow people, come back to their profiles and reach them again. A stranger is just a friend you have only talked to once.

The site itself

What should you know about the site?

ChitChat lives at chitchatgg.live. The pages you are reading are in English. The people you meet may write in any language, which is what the translation of typed messages is for.

The rules that apply to everyone are in the community guidelines. How data is handled is in the privacy policy, and the formal agreement is the terms of service. Each of those is written to be read, not to be scrolled past.

We do not publish star ratings or testimonials on these pages, because praise on a site's own page proves little. The honest test is a short visit as a guest.

Contact

How do you get in touch with ChitChat?

By email at [email protected]. The same address takes technical faults, payment questions, reports that need more explanation than the report option allows, and requests about your data. The contact page lists what to put in the message for each kind of question.

Two things do not need an email at all. Reporting or blocking a person is done from that person's profile, and most camera and sound trouble can be fixed from your browser settings in a minute. If you are still comparing options before you settle in, sites like ChitChat gives you a checklist to judge any site by, and the Omegle alternative page is for anyone arriving with that old habit in mind.

About ChitChat: quick answers

What is ChitChat GG?

ChitChat is a browser-based place to talk to strangers one at a time, on live video or by message, and to follow the people you would like to talk to again. It is free to start.

Why is there no profile to build first?

Because a form is the point where most people give up. You are let in as a guest so that the first thing you do is talk to someone. An account is there for later.

Can I use ChitChat just to practise a language?

Yes. Talk on video with someone who speaks it every day, and type the words you cannot say; typed messages are translated automatically.

Can I use ChitChat without showing my face?

Yes. Open Who's online, choose a person and write to them from their profile. Your camera is only used when you start or accept a video call.

Which languages does ChitChat support?

The site on chitchatgg.live is in English. Typed messages are translated automatically, so you can chat with people who write in other languages.

How does ChitChat make money?

From coins, which people buy when they want more than the free part. It is free to start, so nobody pays before they have tried it.

What is following for?

It saves a person to your following list so you can find them again and message or call them from their profile.

How do I contact ChitChat?

Email [email protected]. The contact page explains what details to include for each kind of question.

That is us. Your turn
