ChitChat How ChitChat Works

How ChitChat Random Chat Works

One tap puts a stranger on your screen. Stay if it clicks, move on if it doesn't, and follow the people you would like to talk to again. Here is each step, in order.

What happens after I tap Start?

Your browser asks for camera and mic, ChitChat finds a random person who is online, and after a short search you are connected one on one.

First tap

What happens when you tap Start?

Four things, one after another: the match screen opens, your browser asks for the camera and microphone, ChitChat finds a person, and the two of you are connected on video. Nothing asks for a name or an email in between.

  1. 1

    The match screen opens

Tapping Start takes you from the home page to the match screen. You are already in as a guest, so there is no stop along the way.

  2. 2

The browser asks for camera and mic

Allow both. The prompt comes from your browser, appears only the first time, and can be changed later from the address bar.

  3. 3

    ChitChat looks for someone

You see a searching state while the site finds a person who is online and free to talk.

  4. 4

    You are connected

The call is live from this moment, so say hello.

The matching

How does ChitChat pick who you meet?

At random, from the people who are online at that moment. The Start button picks for you: whoever is available next is who you meet, which is exactly why two sessions never feel the same.

The pool changes with the clock. Evenings in one part of the world are mornings in another, so the faces you see at lunchtime are not the faces you see at midnight.

On the call

How does ChitChat video chat work?

A video chat here is a live call between two people. Once you are connected you can talk, listen, and type in the message box that sits on the call. Typed lines are handy when the room is noisy or a name needs spelling.

Ending the call is open to both of you. There is also a second way into a video call that does not involve chance at all: open someone's profile, from Who's online or from your following list, and call them directly from there.

The first minute

What do you do in the first minute of a call?

Less than you fear. Both of you have just been dropped in front of a stranger, and both of you know it. That shared awkwardness is the easiest thing in the world to talk about.

Wave before you speak

A wave or a smile lands before any sentence does, and it tells the other person you are friendly before they have decided whether to stay.

Say where you are

"Hi from Lisbon, it is raining" gives them a place, a mood and a reply to make. It works better than "hi" and far better than a string of personal questions.

Ask one easy thing

What time is it there? What were you doing before this? Easy questions get answers, and answers are what a conversation is made of.

Type what will not come out

If the sound is bad, or the word is hard, put it in the message box. Nobody minds. It often gets a laugh.

Look at the camera now and then, not only at the picture. To the other person, that is eye contact.

Moving on

How do you skip, and what happens next?

When you move on, the current call ends and ChitChat looks for the next person. You do not have to give a reason, and neither do they.

Two things are worth knowing. A new match is not weightless: it takes a free match, or coins when you have none left, so racing through people burns them for nothing. And the person on the other side is a human being who also just sat down. Give each chat a fair half-minute before you decide; a lot of good conversations start slowly.

Chance or choice

Random match or Who's online: which one, and when?

Use the random match when you want to be surprised and you are ready to be on camera. It asks nothing of you except a hello, and it is the quickest way to find out what the place is like.

Use Who's online when you would rather choose. It is a live list of people who are on the site, which you can view by country. Tap a person and their profile opens; from there you can write to them or call them. It suits the evenings when you want one good conversation more than five short ones, and the days when you would rather type first. ChitChat chat room describes the list, and text chat with strangers has ideas for what to write.

You can use both: the Start button to meet new people, and the list and your following list to return to the ones they liked.

Keeping in touch

How do you keep someone you liked?

Follow them while you are still talking. A followed person is added to your following list, their profile stays one tap away, and from it you can send a message or start a video call. The home page walks through how that turns a stranger into a friend.

Costs

What does a match cost?

Nothing to begin with: ChitChat is free to start. A call that runs past its free time carries on with coins, and the call tells you before it reaches that point. The free matches, the Reward Center and coins are explained in one place, on is ChitChat free.

When it stalls

What if nobody connects?

Give the search a little longer, then reload and try again. A slow match is normally down to the hour or to your connection, and ChitChat not working goes through both. While you wait, you can open Who's online and write to someone instead of sitting on the searching screen.

A walk-through

What does a first session look like, start to finish?

Here is the order a typical first visit goes in, so nothing catches you off guard.

A first visit to ChitChat, in order
WhenWhat you doWhat you see
First tapOpen the site and tap StartThe match screen, then a camera and microphone prompt
A moment laterAllow camera and micYour own picture, then a search
First chatSay hello to your first matchOne person, with a message box on the call
Still the first chatIt is not clicking, so you move onA new search, then a new face
Second chatThis one is easy to talk toThe same call screen; you type a word they did not catch
Before goodbyeYou tap FollowThey are saved to your following list
LaterYou look at the Reward CenterEither a reward to claim or a countdown to the next one
Before you leaveYou open Who's online out of curiosityA live list of people, which you can view by country

The order is only an illustration. How long you stay with each person is entirely up to the two of you.

Random chat questions

How does ChitChat random chat work?

You tap Start, allow your camera and microphone, and ChitChat connects you with a random person who is online. You talk one on one, and either of you can end the call.

Is ChitChat random really random?

Yes. The match is drawn from whoever is online at that moment, so you cannot predict who you will meet.

Can I choose who I talk to?

Not through the Start button, which picks at random. To choose, open Who's online, browse the list, view it by country if you like, and message or call a person from their profile.

Does ChitChat have video chat?

Yes. Random matching is a live video call between two people, with a message box on the call for typing. You can also start a video call from a person's profile.

Can I talk to the same person again?

Yes, if you follow them. They are saved to your following list, and from their profile you can send a message or call them directly.

Do I have to speak, or can I type?

You can type. The call has a message box, and it is a fine way to spend the first minute.

Can both people end the call?

Yes. You can end it and so can they, and nobody has to give a reason.

How long does a match take?

It depends on the hour and your connection. If the search hangs, reload or switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.

How do I start a video call?

Either tap Start for a random match, or open a profile from Who's online or your following list and use the video call button there.

Now you know how it goes

The first hello is the only hard part, and it is over in two seconds. Tap Start and find out who is next.
